He was born in 1978 near Qobo-Qobo in the Eastern Cape and spent his childhood embedded in traditional rural Xhosa lifeways, developing an intimate relationship with umhlaba (the land, clay, mother earth). His work is bovine, horned, dreamed, sometimes red-breasted and lilac-winged, sometimes lacerated with tectonic fissures, sometimes armed with careful geometries. When talking about his work, Dyalvanes describes clay as “a tool to communicate and connect; to communicate who [he is], and who we are, and what we have been through and what we are capable of doing. Through over 100 recipes, short anecdotes and personal stories, Al Tijani caringly guides newcomers and longtime lovers alike through Sudan's rich tapestry of cuisines and cultures, creating a vivid documentation of the fascinating fusion of meandering foodways that is Sudanese cooking. This triumphant work is a groundbreaking window into Sudan's often overlooked contributions to the culinary arts, made accessible with easy-to-find ingredients, helpful hints, and alternative recipes for most modern diets, such as veganism. In light of the recent upheaval experienced throughout Sudan, steeped in decades of oppression, The Sudanese Kitchen is a defiant representation of the country's rich cultural diversity.

Published 2026 by Almas Art Foundation

Please contact us on our "Contact Us" page if the country you wish to have the book shipped to is not available to select.
